Word Vomit

So, I prefer to think of myself as a simple guy…doing simple things and living life…I am a “Real Boy” as it goes. However, I also know that I am sometimes a little too blunt for my own good. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, this phenomenon is what I refer to as “word vomit”…this is when your mind makes your mouth let out your thoughts before your mind actually has the logical connect to say “Whoa…you might not want to say that”…but it’s already happened and causing the world to come crashing down.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that I don’t have tact because tact is a very useful thing in any business that you decide to stake yourself down to. Being in the teaching profession myself (for the next little while anyway), I realize that there is a time and a place for tact. For example, when a student comes in and gives me a lame excuse for why their paper is late or why they were out sick, sometimes, I just want to say “why don’t you have the ‘nads to tell me that you don’t give a damn about the assignment and just go on.” Don’t just lie to my face…it’s really quite shameful to me. I would much rather have brutal honesty than have someone dancing on pins and needles around me wondering if they’re going to disrupt my universe.

Unless the person wears their heart on their sleeve (to use a cliché that I warn my writing students not to do), they aren’t going to be any more hurt/slash offended than before. I like people who handle the honesty well…it makes telling them things like “your outfit is terrible” or “yeah you should have dumped that bitch sooner” less of a blow and  more easily digested. Why should you have to sugar-coat your relationship with your friends by using little white lies?

So, I guess I’m saying to all of those people out there who like to have the world tiptoe around them that you need to suck it up and live your life taking heed of what others say but not putting so much stock in it that you are reduced to a crumpled mess of tears and snot whenever someone gives you the honest truth that you asked for.
