Captain America

On the web on pretty much every fanboy website and some legitimate new sites, people have been discussing who they think should play Captain America in the upcoming movies: The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers. Why is this casting decision causing so much trouble? Well, there are rumors floating around of unrest with the person who is supposed to be directing the Capt. Movie, of actors ducking out, and many more…However, I think the main reason is that no one really can put their finger on who would make a good Captain America. I mean really he represents the free world and all that the U. S. stands for, the ideals of truth, justice and freedom…Really? Why would that be hard? In my mind though, there are a few other ideas to take into account with casting.

1. Captain America is a character who is out of his element…out of his own time. (Spoiler Alert for those out there that know nothing about the comics!!).Due to him being frozen during WWII, Cap is living in a foreign place. He has been thawed in a more modern world and must face the challenge of acclimating himself to it because although he is a superhero he must also fit in as a regular civilian. The actor playing him must be able to show this depth. If he doesn’t, he will be losing a huge part of the CA character.

2. The person playing Captain America must be American…I know it might sound a little odd, but in the minds of everyone out there, you know that it’s true. I mean I think there are some great British, Irish, Welsh, etc. actors who would play the part and kick ass doing it (Daniel Craig comes to mind). However, this trade-off would not be being true to the heart of the character. He is a symbol of America…it would be odd to have someone other than an American play him…

3. The person who plays him needs to have some basis in the Marvel comic book realm. A person playing a character like this needs to know something about them before they become him. It’s just like playing a character from a well-known book and never reading the books. The actor needs to be versed in the lore and mythology of Cap before they can truly tune into the character. It just makes sense people…

With forerunners like Channing Tatum, Chis Evans, John Krasinski, and others being mentioned, I don’t know that I believe that any of these people can actually tap into the core character that is Captain America. Sure, all of them look like him in some degree or other, but to quote,  “Marvel’s casting choice for Cap must be someone who can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Samuel Jackson’s Nick Fury, and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, to name a few.”  A lot of the movie franchise’s success rests on this choice…will they make the right one?(I also believe that one great casting choice they’ve made is casting Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull…Amazing!). Personally, I think that Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles would make a great Cap. I believe that he has the acting range as well as the look, but that’s just me putting my two-cents worth in.

  1. Down with the actor having to be an American! I will accept either Nathan Fillion or Daniel Craig as Cap and no one else!

(Disclaimer: I have to accept whoever they decide to cast. However, there will likely be nerdrage-fueled ramblings about the final decision on my blog.)

    • Eh…I can see the point of having an American actor. Honestly, I think that it would be heresy to Marvel Comics if they cast a non-American as Cap…it’s just one of those things as a child of Marveldom that I have to stand by…*sigh*…However, I think that they need to find someone who can act. This is my biggest qualm with some of the choices. Also, I think that after you have played a certain character (just as you do) in a Comic franchise (i.e. Marvel, D. C., etc) that you should not be able to play another…My main reason being that the Marvelverse overlaps…the Fantastic Four do not exist completely autonomous from the X-Men or The Avengers or any other character/group.

  2. Chris Evans from the Fantastic Four is now announced to be the front runner for the part…I don’t like that idea…he already exists in the Marvel Universe as another super hero.

  3. John Krasinki? Really? EE! It would be weird, but I do so love him.
