Literary Street Gangs

with 5 comments

I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine, and he was talking about going to St. Louis next week. I made the off-handed comment that he should watch out for the Deatheaters…and suddenly the idea hit me. Wouldn’t it be funny if there were literary based street gangs? I mean seriously I think that it’s an intriguing idea….

“Oh God, here come the Nazgul” screams a passerby as cloaked figures emerge from the shadows wielding swords and muttering something about hobbits and finding a ring.

“Avada Kedavera!” came a hissing from the alleyway as a green flashlight clicked on to reveal several masked, stick wielding persons….

Suddenly, there were people dressed in animal costumes being led by a lion and four children who attacked with ferocity…all the time they were screaming something about a White Witch…I knew the Narnians were upon me.

See what I mean….I think that if they were named after them and followed a theme it would be quite entertaining….but this could just be my F*ed up imagination. Maybe I’ll have to write a short story about this…hmmmm….

  1. The Dickens’ Minor Characters are the ones you need to look out for…there’s just so many of them!

  2. I’m reading The Lies of Locke Lamora right now, and part of it is that there are “themed” gangs who do different things. For instance, some post as clergy and rob people, some are pirate-esque, some ninja, among others. They all have names and subcliques, too. They also war on each other, but the “kids versions” have a strict no-crippling policy.

So I was just thinking of Hermione beating the living hell out of a Nazgul and it screaming foul play because it didn’t want to get crippled.

    Maybe you’re not alone, Barry…

  3. I don’t know about the Narnians as a gang; try instead the White Witch’s “secret police” (wolves). 🙂

Add also the Volturi, Stormtroopers, Klingons, Urgals, and a sprinkling of disgruntled Oompa Loompas, and I’d say you have a veritable literary gang war.
