Reliving the 90’s via Music
Today, I have downloaded 3 very different songs from the 90’s all because they happened to float through my head. Also, they may not all be by people that you even know. Why did I download them? Because I am a self-professed music whore. I think that I should start some kind of support group. However, back to the songs themselves. As I have told many of my friends, I have a unique musical life experience. My mother listened to music from the 60’s and 70’s because that’s the music she grew up with. My sisters had the 80’s, and my brother and I the 90’s and beyond. Yet, each age of music has made me love the variety and the differences (and maybe I’ll get into that another time).
1) “Kiss the Rain” performed by Billie Myers. A love song of sorts where she tells her significant other to “kiss the rain whenever [he] need[s] her”. It’s actually an interesting song. The instrumentation and the electronic effects are fun and create a unique piece.
2) “Are You Jimmy Ray” performed by Jimmy Ray. Probably a song that could be considered about narcissism. He is singing a song about himself. However, it is a fun and kind of silly song about this guy named “Jimmy Ray”. The dance beat leads to it being fun and memorable.
3) “Torn” performed by Natalie Imbruglia. A song that seems to embody the late 90’s almost. It is deeper than the other two songs because it speaks to everyone. It speaks of the transitory nature of relationships as she sees someone isn’t what they are, and this fact makes her feel like she can’t trust herself. With the hypnotic voice of Miss Imbruglia, this song is very intriguing. There is something in the lyrics for everyone.
As I continue to play these on my iPod and computer, I know that they will help me reflect on the 90’s. And what a better way to do it than with music.
You should definitely download “Semi Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind. It still makes me happier than any other song when it comes on my iPod. I’m not sure why, but it just makes me feel all flowy and happy and reminds me of when I was a teenager.
“Torn” is a favorite of mine, too. I used to feel all sneaky singing about being naked on the floor, though. 😉

That’s exactly where I was at today…”Kiss the Rain” popped into my head…and then the flow of songs started. I have “Semi-Charmed Life”…it’s fun. The one 90’s song that I can’t stand though is “Jumper”….I don’t know it’s just irritating.
And teehee to your other comment. 🙂

OMG I love “Kiss the Rain.” I didn’t hear the song til I was like a junior in high school, though, in the early 2000’s…so I was behind the times, going around like “Do you people know this song??? It’s AWESOME!” Yeah.
