An Overdose of Rent

So, Friday night, I went to see my friend perform in Jonathan Larson’s Rent. For those of you who might not know, Rent is a rock opera, and it tells the story of a group of bohemian artists living and starving in New York and follows their lives over the course of a year. While the musical deals with sexuality, interrelationships among people, the AIDS crisis of the 80’s, and much more, it revolves around a core group of characters: Roger, a has-been rock star, Mark, a washed-out filmographer, Mimi, a heroin addicted stripper, Maureen, a newly lesbian actress / diva (also the former girlfriend of Mark), Joann, her new lesbian partner, Angel, a cross-dressing savior, and Collins, a professor who is saved by Angel. While there is a little more to the plot and characterization than this, the plot follows the lives of these individuals and how they deal with paying rent, dying of friends etc.

Well, all of this is to say that my friend was amazing in the show. I’m not going to mention her name because she knows who she is…She played Maureen, and I got the opportunity to “Moo” for her. Overall, the performance of the whole cast was really, really good…my one qualm would be the sound people. To be honest, they kinda sucked. Let’s just say the mics of people would come on after they had been on stage for a couple of lines /measures, which is annoying.

The rest of the performers were all fairly good. However, I came away from the show with a similar thought about one of the characters that I usually have. I don’t know  really care about Mimi. Now, I don’t know whether it’s the different interpretations I’ve seen of her or no, but I just can’t really feel sorry for her in the long run…now, I know that this might make me a heartless individual. However, like I said, part of this might be interpretation. Most people play her as a gruff and angsty loose woman. I don’t know that I really like this interpretation. Yet, the one from the last performance DVD cast is an interesting one to me, and I leave you with a video of Mimi’s biggest song “Out Tonight / Another Day” where she is at her job and then is trying to get Roger to be with her. Enjoy!

I HATE the Mimi on the final Broadway performance…she’s uber-agressive during “Light My Candle” and she has weird vibrato. My friend Collins and I call her “scary-eyes Mimi.”

I am largely the same way about Mimi…she’s not got a lot of redemptive value. I’d hate her if she didn’t mean so much to Roger’s journey, you know what I mean.

    • Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I just don’t know if I’ve heard one that fully embodies what I would expect from said character. Most people play her a certain way (and that’s fine), but I want more.
