Geek Culture and Me

leave a comment »

Just a few seconds ago, I was on Facebook looking at posts from one of my favorite t-shirt sites, teefury.com. The design for the day was one with a Gameboy dressed like Link from the Legend of Zelda series. While the design in itself was cool, I started glancing through the comments on the photo and one of them said “Shut up and take my rupees!” Although the comment got a chuckle from me, it also made me think of the geek culture that I am a part of and that I put out into the world as well. Now, I’m not here to be a self-hating geek (I’ve read some posts that find themselves ashamed of their geek heritage). I just think that it’s fascinating the way geek culture has gained in power.

Everywhere I look, I encounter Doctor Who paraphernalia, Futurama items, Nintendo character merchandise, Marvel and DC comic book items, and much, much more. And I enjoy it. It intrigues me that this surge has occurred, but it also makes me a little happy that the geek culture is being put out there. Though I don’t necessarily appreciate all the iterations of the geek culture that are out there (especially some stereotypical examples of this type of individual in mainstream television and other places), I really like that more and more people are being won over by the geek-iness. Here’s hoping the move only gains in strength.
