Some Watercolor Drawings I Found

leave a comment »

Today, while I was cleaning out my closet a bit, I came across several drawings that I didn’t even remember making. Now, I think that I have progressed some since then. However, I find it interesting to look back at old stuff and be entertained, amazed, and even saddened (if it’s not exactly what you think that it should be). I think that it can help a lot when you look back at the things that you’ve in days past because it can bring new inspiration and that’s exactly what I’m hoping it will be for me.

The first is an image that I copied / reinterpreted from a book that I was reading. I believe it’s of a vampire hunter as seen from the stake that is in his hand. Additionally, I believe he’s going into a valley, so the vampire is able to get to him as the sun is setting in the background. Honestly, I’m not sure why I drew / painted this (it’s done with watercolor pencils on watercolor paper), but I think that it’s interesting to look back and say: What?!? I think that it’s also a pretty interesting picture simply because I’m not exactly sure what is going on in it.

My second picture that I’m a going to share with is one that I would call “The Contemplating Gargoyle.” Again, this is another image that I drew at a point in my life that I’m not completely sure what was going on… this one is a little more unconventional than the first pic (even though the first pic was of a vampire hunter…) It is done in bright colors, and the gargoyle has flaming eyes that appear quite creepy to me as I look back over it now. I think that it’s interesting as well simply because although I usually do unrealistic stuff this is a little more surrealistic and acid trippy than a lot of my other stuff that I have done.

While I know that neither picture is perfect or even that good, they still make me wonder what was going through my mind when I made them and why I decided that I need to draw these images. I know that they were drawn around the same time because they were found in the same place… but the when isn’t really the issue. My thoughts revolve around how they are important to me as an artist (and I use the term with a degree of  bravado and resolution at the same time). They help me see where I have been and where I might be going in terms of my paintings / drawings / crafting in general… and how my creative self functions in other ways. Tomorrow, I will continue my winter cleaning as it were and hope to find other indicators as to what I have been doing for the last little while… (It makes me feel like I’m in “Memento” and I’ve been leaving myself clues…). Here’s hoping that I continue to find a little more of myself, even as I purge the junk.

Music and Its Soothing Effects

leave a comment »

I know that it’s kinda corny at times to think about phrases like “music soothes the savage beast” or more profound ideals like Anais Nin’s “music melts all the separate parts of our bodies together,” but I feel that music can do a lot of these things. Within the past few weeks, I have been a little stressed to say the least (to say the most would not be fun) and haven’t been able to find my focus due to things that are going on in my life. However, tonight, instead of letting myself get bogged down in my own thoughts and crummy feelings, I spent a little while on youtube.com looking up musicals and opera because they intrigue me. Before I knew it, I had spent a care free hour listening to everything from “It’s not Easy Being Green” sung by Big Bird at a Jim Henson tribute (which is heartbreaking) to “Glitter and Be Gay” (a song from Candide the Musical) to The Queen of the Night Aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute. All these songs help me in ways that express a little of what is going on in my head.

It’s a song with a beautiful sentiment to memorialize the memory of Kermit and the man behind him. It also helped to listen to something that was a little blue.

With this one, “The Queen of the Night Aria” performed by Diana Damrau is beautiful and exciting and sort of helps punctuate all the anger, frustration, and angst I’ve been feeling…so yeah…

This last one was just for fun because I needed something to help lift my dark mood. “Glitter and Be Gay” performed by Kristin Chenoweth is pretty amazing because it is light and airy while dealing with some pretty depressing ideals (i.e. she is betrothed to a random duke or other…). It’s a perfect mood lifter…Overall, I feel like this may have help me run a full gambit of emotions while not really thinking about it…while this may not seem healthy or logical to some people, music helps me move along in my mentality and to think through things…maybe you do the same thing and don’t even realize…

Selling Paintings on Etsy.com

with 2 comments

So, as most of you may have seen,  I have been painting quite a bit lately. However, I thought that I might try my hand to sell some of my stuff…I’m not entirely sure what might happen; yet, here’s hoping that I’m the next Picasso (J/K…I don’t think that I’m that great at all…I think that some of my stuff is passable). So for all of you out there, here’s the link to my etsy site: http://www.etsy.com/shop/BarryR22 .

Who knows what might happen?

Art for Sanity’s Sake

leave a comment »

So, with the school year coming to a close, I have been without things to do (this is partially because I have not had a job until this last week…Yay for a job!). When I get really bored things can get bad for those around me…I like to rearrange furniture, clean like there’s no tomorrow, etc. Therefore, I like to do other crafty and artistic things to occupy my time. So, I give you some of the fruits of my labor as  a result of this. I hope you enjoy.

(Left):This one that is acrylics on canvas…it is actually a painting that has been in the works for a while because I started with the blue background and then couldn’t decide what to do with it. Finally, I did something…I don’t quite know how I feel about this one yet…it’s a bit too sunshiny and cheery for my taste.

(Right):The other one is also acrylics on canvas. It was done by using water to help dilute the paint. I find it to be an interesting one simply because it was the first time I had ever tried the water trick.

So yeah, I will continue to paint I suppose because it helps alleviate stress and keeps me sane. I might recommend it to others out there too.

Thinking about Writing and Illustrating a Children’s Book

leave a comment »

So, most of the time my inspiration to do artsy things comes at the most highly inappropriate places as deemed by the rest of society. I’m sure that many of you probably wonder what I mean by this, and yes, I’m going to tell you. Yesterday, while I was sitting in the mother’s day service at church with my mom and dad, I had a though which I believe was pretty interesting to write a children’s book about. Now, I’m not going to divulge any of my ideas because 1) I’m not completely through the idea step of making it and 2) I don’t want my idea to be leaked to the world at large (maybe I’m just paranoid…possibly).

Anyway, I just wanted to see what you guys out in the blogosphere thought might need to be in a children’s book. Any ideas that might make the writing / illustrating of it easier or produce a better product in the long run? I’m just curious what others think because I know what I believe helps produce a higher quality work…so yeah…

Kindle Publishing: A Forray

So, recently, I’ve had a lot of people I know direct publish short stories and novels to the Kindle. So, I decided that I would try something, too. So, I found a story that I have been working on for quite a while and am currently testing the waters on Amazon.com. So, if you would like to read some of my stuff on your Kindle, I might recommend either downloading my short story “Why? A Ghost Story” or getting my blog sent directly to your device. As always, good luck and happy reading!
