Christmas Music that Finds a Place in My Heart

with 3 comments

Yes, contrary to popular belief, I have a heart. And ’tis the time of year for Christmas music to be playing on the radio and shopping centers that surround the nation. However, the music that I love is not generally what we hear out there in the general world because they have to play the six Christmas songs that do not conflict with anyone’s beliefs or that might offend someone. I am of the mind-set that music shouldn’t offend people (if it’s meant to be particularly offensive… I know that there are some people by anything…), but at the same time, I’m not easily offended by anything… Yeah… yeah… Anyway, I think that Christmas music is wonderful, especially some of the classical stuff that many people do not know or care to know because of its Christian affiliation.

The first song (okay, so it’s a mash-up) is one that I have loved for a long time. “O Come, O Come Emanuel / What Child is This”  is a beautiful mass-up of two good songs. This version is being sung by Linda Eder, one of my all time favorite singers. Her beautiful voice makes the song so much more powerful. Also, the arrangement is wonderful, which compliments her voice that much more. (And now I realize I sound like such a fanboy.)

The second song that I recommend for this season entails Straight No Chaser, an a capella group that is pretty amazing. The song is the “12 Days of Christmas”… well, sort of… Their version deals with many Christmas songs and with one that has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas… It’s pretty awesome and adds an air of fun to Christmas that the 17 versions “Jingle Bells” do not have. Awesome!!!

Both these songs are wonderful, and I hope that you enjoy them to get in the spirit of Christmas… or just enjoy them for the beauty and the artistry of the music. Either way, it’s win-win.

Christmas Songs: Favorites, Classics, and a Twist

leave a comment »

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is the music. There’s something about multiple songs that a majority of people know that will get me into the spirit. Maybe it’s because it’s the closest thing to a musical I can get…hmmmm…..Anyway, I’m going to share a few of my favorite Christmas Songs from some artists that I love. So, here you go.

1) “Do You Hear What I Hear”–To me this song is wonderful because of the innocent tone that it has as we progress from words that are spoken by the night wind to the king. That and the melody make it so beautiful and simple. This version is recorded by Kristin Chenoweth, one of my favorite Broadway singers…All I can say is that it’s wonderful.

2) “I Believe”–Released on Andrea Bocelli’s Christmas Album, this song is beautifully sung by both Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins. It’s a song of hope and love that is simple and powerful. While it was released on a Christmas album, I think that it’s an anytime song.

3) “The First Noel / Mary, Mary” –Sung by Sarah McLachlan. A beautiful, interesting version of the two songs…I discovered it when I was looking for the other two videos. Enjoy.

4) “Silent Night”–A little different from the version we normally hear. However, still beautiful with Ruthie Henshall singing lead on it. Also, a refreshing change from the one that we are accustomed too.

5) “12 Days of Christmas”–While the original song is a little repetitive, this version by Straight No Chaser is quite fun. I would recommend listening to it and seeing for yourself…but let’s just say if you know 80’s pop songs you’ll definitely get  a kick out of it.

So, there you have it. A few songs to help you get into the Christmas spirit. I know that while I’ve been searching out the videos it has definitely got me into the mood for Christmas. 🙂
