Captain America

with 4 comments

On the web on pretty much every fanboy website and some legitimate new sites, people have been discussing who they think should play Captain America in the upcoming movies: The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers. Why is this casting decision causing so much trouble? Well, there are rumors floating around of unrest with the person who is supposed to be directing the Capt. Movie, of actors ducking out, and many more…However, I think the main reason is that no one really can put their finger on who would make a good Captain America. I mean really he represents the free world and all that the U. S. stands for, the ideals of truth, justice and freedom…Really? Why would that be hard? In my mind though, there are a few other ideas to take into account with casting.

1. Captain America is a character who is out of his element…out of his own time. (Spoiler Alert for those out there that know nothing about the comics!!).Due to him being frozen during WWII, Cap is living in a foreign place. He has been thawed in a more modern world and must face the challenge of acclimating himself to it because although he is a superhero he must also fit in as a regular civilian. The actor playing him must be able to show this depth. If he doesn’t, he will be losing a huge part of the CA character.

2. The person playing Captain America must be American…I know it might sound a little odd, but in the minds of everyone out there, you know that it’s true. I mean I think there are some great British, Irish, Welsh, etc. actors who would play the part and kick ass doing it (Daniel Craig comes to mind). However, this trade-off would not be being true to the heart of the character. He is a symbol of America…it would be odd to have someone other than an American play him…

3. The person who plays him needs to have some basis in the Marvel comic book realm. A person playing a character like this needs to know something about them before they become him. It’s just like playing a character from a well-known book and never reading the books. The actor needs to be versed in the lore and mythology of Cap before they can truly tune into the character. It just makes sense people…

With forerunners like Channing Tatum, Chis Evans, John Krasinski, and others being mentioned, I don’t know that I believe that any of these people can actually tap into the core character that is Captain America. Sure, all of them look like him in some degree or other, but to quote CNN.com,  “Marvel’s casting choice for Cap must be someone who can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Samuel Jackson’s Nick Fury, and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, to name a few.”  A lot of the movie franchise’s success rests on this choice…will they make the right one?(I also believe that one great casting choice they’ve made is casting Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull…Amazing!). Personally, I think that Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles would make a great Cap. I believe that he has the acting range as well as the look, but that’s just me putting my two-cents worth in.

Top Actors/Actresses for Me

with one comment

Sometimes people ask me who I think my favorite actors and actresses are…to which I reply that I have favorite old and younger male and female of both. Honestly, I go back and forth between several. However, these are the ones that I’m am intrigued by at this point.

Actors

Anthony Hopkins is my pick for my older actor. I think its because he so charming and diverse…and he does have that English flair to boot. He has also been in many things from The Silence of the Lambs to The Wolfman which is hitting theaters today even as I type this. I think he is a phenomenal actor with many credits to his name. He embodies the characters he plays.

Edward Norton is probably my favorite younger actor. I think it’s mainly because of his range. He has been a skinhead in the movie American History X, a person with some severe mental issues and an overall badass in Fight Club, and been beloved Marvel character Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk. Overall, he is one of a kind….However, I will say that a close second was Robert Downey Jr.

Actresses

Meryl Streep is probably my favorite actress out there right now simply because she can play almost any character to a tee. She has been Julia Childs, the “devil”, and an immortal corpse in the scope of her career. And at the age of 61, she still competes with all the younger girls of Hollywood for parts. She is a clever actress with many qualities that others out there wish they had. She is amazing in every sense of the word.

Lastly, Cate Blanchett is my favorite younger actress because she is ethereal and lovely. She like Streep is able to play roles from an elven queen to a teacher who sleeps with one of her students. She plays each part with incredible vivacity. She has such range and abilities that it’s obvious why she has been nominated for vast numbers of awards for her acting prowess.  Personally, I just find that her voice is beautiful and enthralling (I wish she would narrate more or voice over books)…but anyway, I think she has earned her place in the golden ways of Hollywood.

So, there you have it…that’s my top four and some of the reasons why…if you want to know more, feel free to ask.
