Christmas Songs: Favorites, Classics, and a Twist

leave a comment »

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is the music. There’s something about multiple songs that a majority of people know that will get me into the spirit. Maybe it’s because it’s the closest thing to a musical I can get…hmmmm…..Anyway, I’m going to share a few of my favorite Christmas Songs from some artists that I love. So, here you go.

1) “Do You Hear What I Hear”–To me this song is wonderful because of the innocent tone that it has as we progress from words that are spoken by the night wind to the king. That and the melody make it so beautiful and simple. This version is recorded by Kristin Chenoweth, one of my favorite Broadway singers…All I can say is that it’s wonderful.

2) “I Believe”–Released on Andrea Bocelli’s Christmas Album, this song is beautifully sung by both Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins. It’s a song of hope and love that is simple and powerful. While it was released on a Christmas album, I think that it’s an anytime song.

3) “The First Noel / Mary, Mary” –Sung by Sarah McLachlan. A beautiful, interesting version of the two songs…I discovered it when I was looking for the other two videos. Enjoy.

4) “Silent Night”–A little different from the version we normally hear. However, still beautiful with Ruthie Henshall singing lead on it. Also, a refreshing change from the one that we are accustomed too.

5) “12 Days of Christmas”–While the original song is a little repetitive, this version by Straight No Chaser is quite fun. I would recommend listening to it and seeing for yourself…but let’s just say if you know 80’s pop songs you’ll definitely get  a kick out of it.

So, there you have it. A few songs to help you get into the Christmas spirit. I know that while I’ve been searching out the videos it has definitely got me into the mood for Christmas. 🙂

Bridge Over Troubled Water: Relief for Haiti

with one comment

At the Grammy’s a week or so ago, Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli performed a version of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to benefit the Haitian Relief Effort. The proceeds of the songs (as sold on iTunes) goes 100% toward aiding Haiti. It was a glorious melding of voices that seem to be opposite ideals of each other. The sultry soulful voice of Blige and the angelic voice of Bocelli blended together as if to state that no matter what our differences are we can stand united as a world community to help and defend those in bad places.

“Bridge Over Troubled Water”

Sei hai paura
E dentro gli’occhi tuoi
la ….
Il correrera’
e’ l’asiugero’….
Il sole rivertrai
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.

When you’re down and out, when you’re on the street
When evening falls, when it falls so hard I will comfort you.
I’ll take your part.

When darkness comes, oh yeah, and pain is all, all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.
(Andrea) I will lay me down, (Mary) I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl, sail on by.
Your time has come to shine
(Andrea) All you dreams, (Mary) All those dreams are on their way.

(Both) See how they shine.
(Mary) Oh-oh
If you need a friend, if you need a friend…

Like a bridge over troubled water,

I will lay me down, I will lay me down.

(Both) Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
I will ease your mind
I will ease your mind
I will ease your mind
I will ease your mind
I will ease your mind.

(Both) I WILL EASE YOUR MIND.(Mary) I will ease your mind.

If for no other reason than buying a beautiful version of a classic song, I would suggest purchasing this song from iTunes. It’s a message of hope, love, and sincerity.
