Captain America vs. The Red Skull

I’m sure it has come to everyone’s attention at this point that they are producing a Captain America Movie starring Chris Evans as Capt. Well, as you know, I am on the fence about this decision for many, many reasons and have mentioned them before. Therefore, I will not go into them now. However, I think a great casting choice that they’ve made is who is going to play the Red Skull, Capt.’s main villain. Brace yourself…it’s going to be Hugo Weaving.

Honestly, as much as I dislike the Chris Evans casting, I approve of this casting whole heartedly. Why? Because Weaving is an amazing actor. Watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Transformers (he voiced Megatron), and many more to see his acting chops. He is an amazing actor and will bring the character of the Red Skull into glorious reality (as far as movie reality goes…). Weaving has ability to become this character.

The only thing that I really worry about with this casting choice is how will Evans fare against this powerhouse? I mean seriously Weaving is more experienced and brings a large presence to the screen. I mean for God sakes in V for Vendetta he, as V,  overshadowed Natalie Portman’s performance and this was without the use of facial expressions…or even seeing his face for that matter. He is that good. It scares me that he will make the tilt of the movie a little off kilter compared to Evans….However, that being said, I believe that he will make the movie something to watch…rather than it just being a Captain America fan’s wet dream.

In my opinion, Weaving will be the reason to watch the movie, and this fact is sad to say because Capt. should be amazing. He is “The First Avenger” afterall. So, while I still hold my breath to see if Evans performance is any good (I still haven’t completely passed judgment because I have been surprised before), I know that Weaving will be amazing…enough said.

Captain America: Chris Evans?!?

leave a comment »

Chris Evans of Fantastic Four movie fame has been named as Steve Rogers/Captain America for the upcoming movies that Marvel is in the process of producing. My immediate response was Why?. I mean he’s okay as seen from roles such as Mace in the movie Sunshine with Cillian Murphy. However, I don’t think that he’s the right actor for the part for several reasons.

1) I don’t think that he has the right dynamic to compete with the other actors. It’s just one of those things. I’m not saying that he is just super low key either. It’s just that he’s going to have to act against Robert Downey Jr. and Sam Jackson (two very seasoned actors). Captain America is the leader of the Avengers for all practical purposes…he has to be able to believably take the reigns of leadership; honestly, I don’t know that he can do this when teamed with Jr.’s Tony Stark…

2) The jury is out as to whether he can pull off the “person from another time in the modern world” issue. Most of the roles in which he has appeared are not roles that require a lot of acting dynamic…I’m sorry even being the Captain of a ship that is destined to crash into the sun isn’t really enough. It’s one of those things that has been problematic for me since the being of casting talks. Who has the acting range to play this character and still fit all of our criteria (physically fit, American, etc. )? The answer is no one really knows what prominent actor has the chops to play this person and still be the right fit. I only hope that Evans will prove me wrong about his acting prowess.

3) He’s already been a character in the Marvelverse. This probably bothers me the most and is the most trivial of all the reasons. I don’t like the fact that the movie companies are so willing to compromise the artistry of the universe in order to cast him as another person. I know in the end all that matters to them is the money that rolls in; however,  I would also like to think that there was someone in the casting room going “Wait hasn’t he already been in one of our movies?” In my head, it just makes the idea of the “bridging of the universe” in the Avengers movie a little problematic because Reed Richards and the other members of the Fantastic Four will possibly appear in the sequels to the Avengers movie (face it, the sequels are going to happen).

Overall, I think that I am a little disappointed in their casting decision purely because Chris Evans as a dynamic, multifaceted actor is an unknown factor to me. I suppose we shall just have to see when the movie does come out in 2011 whether or not my theory holds up or whether I will be eating my own words.
