Summer Reading

leave a comment »

The summer usually holds a bevy of books for me as I move from the franticness of school to more relaxing reading. So far this summer, I have read The Hunger Games Trilogy and the last Sookie Stackhouse Book, but now I’m working through Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan ‘s The Strain, which is interesting to say the least. I’ll keep you all posted, but right now, it reads to me like a modernized Dracula-esque novel… I can’t wait to finish this one and launch into the remainder of their Trilogy.

People Watching

leave a comment »

I don’t know how many of the people who read this actually do it, but I frequently find myself sitting back and watching the train wreck that is humanity. Now, I admit that it’s not all bad. However, I also know that the normal occurences of life aren’t what gather my attention on a regular basis. It’s the crazies out there. You know who I’m talking about. The couple arguing with whispers and large hand movements, the group of guys who look like they’re up to no good, the random woman stalking about in the paper thin dress. Yes, the quirky, odd things of life.

Why do I watch? I gain pleasure from just sitting back and analyzing people. It helps me determine what drives them and define a little more of what they’re about. A forlorn glance to one side when you’re amid a group of raucous coeds tells me that more is on your mind and that you haven’t mentioned it to your friends. A giggle inappropriately during a church services says to me that the conversation you’re having on the bulletin is much more interesting than what the orator is saying. A couple holding hands but having nothing else to do or say with each other as they walk from place to place tells me that that relationship is not going well…or is possibly about to end….There are subtle hints to every mystery of life if you just take the time and watch.

I am a “People Watcher”. I do it because it helps me get a little more info on the human condition and gives me room to think about where we’re at. I also do it because I am an actor. It helps me when I need to build characters later who are nothing like myself (believe me if you’re having to play someone who is quiet and reserved, and you’re not…this kind of thing is handy). So, I would suggest on a sunny, warm afternoon (hopefully this will be soon) going out somewhere and watching the people who are staring up looking at the clouds.
